Done a year or two after the Saint Jerome in a Dark Room, the Rest on the Flight continues Rembrandt's work on the "dark manner" technique, adding to it the additional difficulty of doing so on a miniscule scale. Rembrandt made four states of this print as he tried to balance the fall of the lantern's light. The subject is one to which he turned many times, including two of his earliest experiments in etching from the 1620s. A later print of the subject, done in 1651, is even more intensely worked, with six states (all by Rembrandt) having been identified.
