Kunisada, who would be the predominant artist to publish prints of the stylish characters from the Inaka Genji, also produced illustrations of the original eleventh-century novel with the figures in Heian-period dress and in antiquated styles. The moment depicted in this print is when the male courtier suddenly recognizes that the boy, who was thought to be the son of Prince Genji, was actually fathered by someone else. He then recited the poem which is written at the top of the page as a way to indirectly state his awareness of the matter.
