This figure from a Kabuki play is a character who is an outlaw hiding in the upper storey of a Buddhist temple in Kyoto. When he comes out to survey the scene for potential victims, a glimmer of his redeeming nature is revealed when he is struck by the beauty of the cherry blossoms in bloom. At this moment, his pursuers see his reflection in the water of a bronze urn below, which allows them to capture him. This print is from a series of actor prints, each of which is associated with a work of classic poetry. The artist has matched this scene with a poem by the ninth-century Buddhist monk Sosei H?shi, which is written in the white square at the top of the page. It translates: Looking afar at the capital where willow and cherry blossoms intermingle, a spring brocade
