Mitsuuji, the protagonist of Inaka Genji, is shown here on a pleasure trip in autumn, having just arrived at a scenic spot to enjoy the maple leaves. Three ladies, all dressed in colorful, luxurious kimono, accompany him. Mitsuuji is a nineteenth-century version of Prince Genji, but he is the illegitimate son of the Shogun instead of the emperor. The scene shown here is a completely new image conceived by the artist who imaginatively placed the characters from the novel in this setting. Derivative images like this that set Mitsuuji and other characters from the Inaka Genji into new contexts started to appear by the late 1830s or early 1840s.
