Hasui, a lifetime collaborator with Watanabe Publisher, created several hundred landscape prints, but unfortunately many of his original designs were destroyed in the 1923 Kanto earthquake. Hasui's use of shadow and light were influenced by Western techniques. In this print, he captures a hauntingly silent summer night surrounding an old tree and a traditional Japanese house. Distant stars twinkle, providing dim light and enhancing the quietness of the remote village.
