Mokham Singh rides Samser
by Kedarji
Northern India, Kishangarh
Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, ca. 1840
Edwin Binney 3rd Collection, 1990.772

The king Mokham Singh of Kishangarh (r. 1832-40) and his handsome steed gallop across the foreground of this painting. In the distance can be seen Kishangarh’s famous Gandalao lake, with the white palaces and red boats that are a feature of many paintings from this court. A royal procession passes between the lakeside hills in the middle ground. The heavy-lidded, swooping eyes of the figures are an affectation of this court’s artists, but the men are portrayed as more full-figured than in earlier portraits from this court.
