The Agnus Dei is both an extraordinary still life painting, in the same Spanish tradition as the adjacent canvas by Sánchez Cotán, and a work of profound religious sentiment. The inscription on the ledge below the animal reads “tanquam agnus” (like a lamb), a reference to Biblical passages that liken Christ to a sacrificial animal: “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and like a lamb dumb before the shearer, so opened he not his mouth.”
