This sculpture originally would have stood in an architectural setting -- perhaps a temple or shrine – although the precise is unknown. A nearly identical figure (though lacking its head) is in the collection of the San Antonio Museum of Art. This indicates that at least these two figures of Ramesses, and possibly more, once formed a group that probably flanked a doorway or stood between the columns of a colonnade. Pharaonic figures in the great temples at Luxor, Karnak and similar sites tended to be monumental, so the modest scale of this work suggests that it may have originated from a minor provincial site.
