It was the discovery of Abstract Expressionism in the 1960s that inspired Charles Arnoldi to train as an artist, first at the Art Center in Los Angeles and then at the Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts). By 1969, however, he had had abandoned his studies, and with them the practice of painting—which Arnoldi judged increasingly irrelevant. In marked contrast to the gestural abstraction of the New York School and the Hard-Edge geometry of his California contemporaries, Arnoldi began experimenting with found objects: creating painted, sculptural compositions. The branches and twigs that Arnoldi assembled in his stick constructions form fragile, linear lattices, as in this wall relief of 1979. The use of wood, in combination with other materials, remains one of the main features of Arnoldi’s art.
