Pae White’s sculptural installation Hobo Woods / Tears of Vietnam is composed of ninety-six strands of thread and hundreds of small pieces of Color-aid paper. Color-aid paper, produced since 1948, has provided artists, including Josef Albers (1888–1976), who pioneered its artistic use, with a tool for creative innovation. The pieces of paper, suspended from wires, seem to float in the air, giving the piece an ethereal feel. The scale of the work invites viewers to consider their physical selves in relation to the piece. While Hobo Woods / Tears of Vietnam does not represent the title in a literal way, it possesses a more abstract and conceptual response to the Vietnam War. Hobo Woods was a base area for the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War.
