Born and raised in Chicago, John Storrs studied in Paris with Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) and met many important artists of the day, including his fellow American and sculptor Alexander Calder (1898–1976). Although Storrs was deeply infatuated with France, he continued to be influenced by two architects who made the biggest impact on the city of his birth, Louis Sullivan (1856–1924) and Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959). His works, like the piece depicted here, are often minimal and possess strong geometric shapes. His sculptures of the 1920s and 1930s demonstrate the influence of skyscrapers and urban construction. Moreover, many of his sculptures, including this one, anticipate the widespread impact of Art Deco among American architects and sculptors. Here, he demonstrates a dedication to formal abstraction but also exhibits the elegance that so defined Art Deco.
