Paris: A Century as Europe's Art Capital

Just as the Academy enforced rigid rules regulating both subject and style in painting, sculptors also adhered to restrictive conventions regulating their art. While Rodin’s sculpture did not follow Academic stylistic dictates, they were developed according to Academic methods. In addition to drawn sketches, Rodin worked in three dimensions, completing series of studies leading to his major, large-scale projects. This small bronze study eventually led to his figure of Polyphemus, a character drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, which was incorporated into Rodin’s monumental Gates of Hell.
