This rare and important sculpture is one of the few surviving works made at the request of Emperor Duan Zhengxing, who ruled the Dali Kingdom from 1147 to 1172. The inscription on the back states that it was made on behalf of two princesses for the sake of ensuring the prosperity and longevity of multitudinous sons. The stiff frontal stance, symmetrical robes, and ornate adornments impart a formal, hierarchical impression. There is, however, a human tenderness in the gentle face, and the body is fragile, youthful, and slender.
