Truly excellent in his depiction of nature and animals, Barye was among the most forceful sculptors of the French Romantic era. Great works showed animals and beasts of prey locked in mortal combat. his concern with minute details reflects his skill at the jeweler's craft. His human figures lack the force and motion of his animals and gods. Life, power and tension are seen in this small work depicting the mortal battle of the Greek god Theseus and the monstrous Minotaur.
