Art critics see Smith's sculpture as the most consequential produced anywhere during his generation. His adaptation of direct metal welding, as a principal sculpture technique, was opposed to traditional carving and modelling. His preoccupation with light and masses resulted in the "Cubi Series" in the 1960's. Created in stainless steel, the work reflects the artist's choice for that material as the most practical for out-of-door sculpture for which he has a preference.
