Tracking and Tracing Installation
The triptych Untitled (AOT 5) was made as part of a larger project titled …and of time created as a special commission for the 2000 exhibition Departures 11: Artists at the Getty. Uta Barth was inspired by two works in the Getty Center's collection, Monet's Wheatstacks, Snow Effect, Morning (1891) and Robert Irwin's Central Garden (1997), works that, although very different in medium, focus on the effects of transitory light on the environment and its physical perception by the eye. Unitled (AOT 5) features three photographs from the interiors of her home sparsely furnished with an orange sofa and a George Nelson lamp. By framing the patch of light above these objects, Barth makes the viewer aware of looking as a time-conditioned activity. She said in 1996, “My primary object has always been in finding ways to make…viewer[s] aware of their own activity of looking at something…”
This piece, together with another artwork by Los Angeles artist Pae White, were purchased with monies from the Suzanne Figi Latin American and Contemporary Art Fund. The Fund was endowed in 2000 after the curator in contemporary art position was established at SDMA. An important San Diego collector, particularly of Latin American Modernism, Ms. Figi works closely with the contemporary curator in the selection of works that continue the collection's focus on contemporary art from California.
