Life and Legacy 2019:

Before being printed as a book, Hemingway’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novella The Old Man and the Sea was published in Life on September 1, 1952, along with photographs of the author by Eisenstaedt. The temperamental writer was one of Eisenstaedt’s most difficult portrait subjects, arguing with and sometimes threatening the photographer over their creative differences. With patience and diplomacy, Eisenstaedt was eventually able to succeed in taking a series of memorable images of the legendary author.
