Willem de Kooning
Gelatin silver print • 1959
Arnold Newman was one of the great portrait photographers of the twentieth century. He is particularly regarded for his iconic portraits of artists. This portrait of the painter Willem de Kooning (1904–1997) was used on the cover of a well- received biography about the artist’s life, de Kooning: An American Master by Mark Stevens and Annalyn Swan (2004). Newman preferred to photograph artists in their studios and often used a subject’s work in the construction of the photo- graph. Here, de Kooning’s signature Abstract Expressionist style is on view on the wall behind. This photograph was taken in 1959, during a period of great success for the painter.
