Frankenthaler (1928–2011) was a New York artist whose teachers included Rufino Tamayo and Hans Hoffmann. She is perhaps best known for her development of Color Stain Painting, a technique initially influenced by Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings. Pouring diluted acrylic paint over canvases laid on the floor, Frankenthaler created diaphanous patches of color that seem to float on the surface and vaguely evoke ethereal landscapes. Newman photographed Frankenthaler in her studio posed within an abstract composition of light and dark dominated by one of her canvases in the right foreground and juxtaposed against the light areas of walls and floor.
