Ancient Monolith found near Ghazeepore, now in the grounds of Queens CollegeSamuel Bourne, (1834–1912)
Ghazipur, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, was historically covered in dense forest where saints of the Vedic period (ca. 1500–500 BC) dwelled in seclusion. In 1820, the British East India Company established an opium factory there that greatly enhanced the finances of the British Empire and remains the largest legal opium operation in the world.
