Mount Iztaccíhuatl and the
Environs of Amecameca
Albumen print, ca. 1900
Briquet, a photography teacher and studio photographer in Paris,
arrived in Mexico in 1883, commissioned by the shipping firm
Compagnie Maritime Transatlantique to photograph Mexican
ports. He opened his own studio in Mexico City and established
a prolific career as the first modern commercial photographer in
Mexico. The government of President Porfirio Díaz hired Briquet
to document the many modernization projects of the era such as
the building of the Mexican National Railway as well as to produce
images of tipos, “typical” scenes and people, to distribute in
commemorative albums.
