Allegory of Carnal Love
Engraving • ca. 1490
Warning of the danger of carnal desire in the absence of
divine love, the putti (small angels) offer poppies and a
skull to the mortal lovers. The flowers refer to the ill-fated
Adonis and Mekon, who had rejected the heavenly love of
Venus and Ceres, respectively. For a Christian audience, the
parallel to God’s love would have been immediately clear.
