Jupiter and Europa
(after Hendrick Goltzius)
Engraving • ca. 1590
Taking the form of a beautiful white bull, Jupiter set about
wooing Europa amidst her herd of cattle. Her initial apprehension
towards the beast’s attentions having eventually
subsided, Europa straddled the bull, not realizing his
true form. Jupiter walked her along the shoreline and then
further and further out into the sea, eventually carrying her
away to the island of Crete.
