In retaliation for her mother’s boasting of her beauty,
Neptune punished Andromeda by chaining her to a rock
and sent the sea monster Cetus to devour her. Perseus, the
great hero known for killing Medusa, came to Andromeda’s
rescue and the two were married. The themes of chivalry
and divine love would have resonated with the intended
audience of this print, and such depictions inspired painters
such as Rubens and Rembrandt.
