A commonly recurring theme in the sixteenth century,
vanitas allegories reflected the transience of human existence,
likening life to the fleeting nature of a bubble or a
wisp of smoke. In the Latin title of this work, Goltzius’s
Cupid-like cherub asks, “Who escapes it?” with the implication
that no one eludes death. Images like this encouraged
morality and piety in contemporary viewers.
