Daggers such as this, known as katars (Sanskrit for ‘dagger’), are in a form that is unique to India. They were extremely common in the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries among soldiers and courtly noblemen of the warrior class. The delicate vegetal scrollwork and abstract motifs are inlaid with gold. Katars were worn in the belt, as seen in many royal portraits.
