Asian Tastes Installation
Weapons of war were refashioned as courtly accessories among the ruling warrior classes of northern India, especially in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Jade was a material that became particularly prized as a result of trade contact with China. This example of a special type of dagger handle known as a khapwah is exquisitely carved with areas of floral and vegetal ornamentation. The elegant flare of the pommel and voluted knuckle-guard reflect the increasingly refined tastes of the wealthy members of the Mughal court and the nobles of tributary kingdoms. One such nobleman
in the painting from Bilaspur (1990:1154) grasps a sword with a handle that is of much the same type.
