Jalis, or pierced screens, were used extensively in Indian architecture as windows, room dividers, and railings. In the course of the day, the movement of their patterns in silhouette across the floor would enhance the pleasure of their intricate geometry. Based on the form of its pattern, this screen is dated to the reign of the Mughal emperor Jahangir (r. 1605–27), but this tradition of fine craftsmanship continued into the early twentieth century as older monuments were renewed and repaired.
