Devotional Arts of Nepal
Images of Hayagriva, like other Tibetan Buddhist paintings and sculptures, are housed in profusion in monasteries, which were also filled with painted wooden furniture. This cabinet not only is an example of monastic furniture, but it also is painted with depictions of the types of monasteries in which these objects were kept and used in Buddhist practice. Traditional Tibetan monastic architecture was painted red and white, and here they function as the setting for lively narrative scenes. The lower two panels depict reclusive Buddhist masters and scenes from a popular Buddhist fable.
