Paris: A Century as Europe's Art Capital

Dupré, who spent his entire life in or around Paris, grew up in an environment that was rich with art. Most importantly, his uncle Jules Dupré was a distinguished Barbizon painter who had worked with Corot and studied with a protégé of Ingres. From his uncle, Dupré learned to paint life in rural France, depictions of which dominate his work. His paintings were first shown at the 1876 Paris Salon, the same year he was honored at the Philadelphia Centennial exhibition.

Like Bouguereau’s shepherdess, Dupré’s sentimental depictions were tremendously popular with Parisian collectors even though they bear little resemblance to the realities of rural life that often included poverty and hardship.
