Satyrs were mythological beasts, human forms with the
lower body of a goat, often seen dancing and drinking with
the god Bacchus. Dürer’s highly original depiction, inspired
by Italian models, shows the satyr serenading his wife and
new baby, thereby domesticating a figure more typically
depicted engaged in debauchery.
