Label Copy

2008, (previous attribution): Massimo Stanzione was as a young artist greatly influenced by the works that Caravaggio made during his time in Naples. Yet, after spending time in Northern Italy, Stanzione sought to combine Caravaggio’s dramatically lit and brutally realistic style with the other principal trend in 17th-century Italian art, the classical, lyrical manner of painters from Bologna. This canvas shows the result of that combination: the scene is theatrically lit, but the elegant pose of the young David tempers the potentially gory subject.
A conservation treatment in 1999 uncovered the head of Goliath at lower left, which had long ago been covered with overpaint.
