The son of a silversmith, Samuel van Hoogstraten was first trained by his father but after the latter’s death in 1642 entered the studio of Rembrandt. Although his earliest works bear an obvious debt to Rembrandt’s, Van Hoogstraten was a notably diverse artist, and his paintings range from portraits to history scenes to trompe l’oeil still lifes like this canvas. He was also a courtier, a leading citizen of his native Dordrecht, a poet, and the author of an important treatise on the art of painting. The many facets of his creative personality are all in evidence in this composition. As in most of van Hoogstraten’s paintings, there is a self-consciousness about the act of creation, for the relatively loose handling of the paint here would seem to be at odds with the precision that the eye-fooling technique might require. Partly thus an exercise in a theory of painting, but even more a visual game for the amusement and amazement of his audience, the Feigned Letter Rack seems to have been made during van Hoogstraten’s time at the court of Emperor Ferdinand III at Vienna.
