Still-life and flower painting began to develop during the 17th century, partly as a deliberate turn away from traditional religious and historical subject matter, especially in those areas of the Netherlands that had adopted the Protestant faith. Somewhat in reaction, there developed in the still-Catholic areas of the Low Countries a related but resolutely sacred genre, which adorned images of the Virgin and Christ Child with elaborate wreaths of flowers. This example, executed on a large sheet of copper that gives the work its enameled surface, was probably made in Rome during the two years that Seghers spent there following his ordination in 1625 as a Jesuit priest.
