These panels were once the wings of a small portable triptych. They probably flanked an image of the Madonna and Child and were perhaps topped by triangular pediments depicting the Annunciation. These are the inner faces of the wings, the parts shown when the triptych was open. Saints Anthony Abbot and Francis were perennially among the most popular subjects of devotion in Tuscany, and Saint Ansanus is one of the patron saints of Siena, where this panel was painted. Saint James and Saint Christopher (who is shown on the back of these panels) are the patron saints of travelers and are thus often found on portable devotional works. The reverse faces of the panels are the outer faces of the triptych wings and would have been seen when the altarpiece was closed; their monochromatic grisaille technique was probably meant to emulate relief sculpture. They are by the Sienese artist, Niccolò di Buonaccorso, who often collaborated with the Master of Panzano.
