This scene depicts the dramatic moment when Jesus outsmarted the Pharisees, who tried to incriminate him before the Romans by asking if they should pay taxes to the emperor. Jesus responded by pointing to Caesar’s image on a coin and saying that the Pharisees should give Caesar his due as they would give God his due.
Bazzani was known for his expressive, fluid brushwork and rich palette. This style shows the influence of earlier artists represented in Mantua: Titian, Veronese, and Rubens. --MAB 2016
