Label Copy

The carnation was a traditional symbol of betrothal or marriage in German art, and husbands and wives were often depicted in paired portraits, facing one another, with one or both of the sitters holding that flower. The woman in this painting is probably the wife of the scholar Petrus van Clapis, for the picture seems to be the companion to his portrait, which is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest.
