Hieronymus Bosch is best known for fantastic, visionary paintings such as the Garden of Earthly Delights (Madrid, Museo del Prado), but even when painting more familiar religious subjects, he often distorted his figures into something like caricature for more powerful effect. This painting, for example, contrasts the bestial ugliness of Christ’s tormenters with the serene image of Christ himself. The composition was initially devised for an altarpiece dedicated to the Passion of Christ. Bosch’s works were so popular, however, that the artist and his workshop often took motifs from his altarpieces and turned them into independent paintings. The San Diego panel is an example of this new genre of “the dramatic close-up.”
