The story of Apollo and Daphne is among the most familiar tales of Greco-Roman mythology and a favorite subject for artists in Renaissance and Baroque Europe. The god Apollo was enflamed with love for the nymph Daphne, but she, wishing to remain chaste, rejected him and fled into the forest. Apollo gave chase, and the nymph prayed to her father, the river god Peneus, to save her from Apollo’s embrace. Just as Apollo was about to catch Daphne, she was transformed into a laurel tree, with her toes stretching down into the ground as roots and her fingers turning into branches and sprouting leaves. Executed in the painterly style so characteristic of Veronese’s work, this canvas presents an interesting take on the story. It shows not the climactic moment of the chase and Daphne’s transformation, but rather, the anticlimactic moment just afterwards, when Apollo stares upward with wonder at the metamorphosis that has occurred.
