Asian Court Rotation
During the Edo period, shoguns and the daimyos retained ateliers of artists in Edo, the capital, to produce lavish lacquer objects that would be displayed or used in a reception hall, library, as accouterments for the Noh drama, and as household furnishings. This example is decorated with the “pear-skin ground” (nashiji), where gold powder or flakes have been suspended in the lacquer. Kendai is used for reading books or music scores, which could be stored in the drawer at the base. The stand is elevated so that the book would be positioned at eye level of someone who is seated.
