Scarves and drapery flow loosely around the muscular and powerful body seated in the posture of “royal ease.” The rocky pedestal evokes the setting of Mt. Potala, the abode of Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit), as described in the influential Avatamsaka sutra. Overall, the image projects an aura of openness, approachability, and majestic calm.
