Ito Shinsui worked as a Shin hanga artist, collaborating with Watanabe Shozaburo for twenty-five years. However, this early landscape subject, which reflects the momentary anticipation of a storm, shares experimental qualities with Sosaku hanga, using unconventional compositions and textures, in opposition to the Shin hanga approach to landscape, which stressed Japanese activity to nature and seasons.
