Instead of using old guidebooks as sources for images like many nineteenth-century artists, Hasui based the images in this series from his original sketches that he created on a tour of central and western Japan. Kinosaki was a travel destination famous for its hot springs. The unique treatment of light effectively conveys the glistening rainy street scene lit with artificial lamps.
