Kawase Hasui was among the best-known Shin hanga artists to Western audiences. This print from the Series Twelve Subjects of Tokyo portrays a bamboo-gatherer resting on top of his wagon at midday during the Tokyo symmer. Bundles of bamboo block the horizon view but a V-shape opening offers a peek across the Sumida River towards the opposite bank, which seems to be quietly cooling in the breeze.
