Serizawa’s bold and colorful images make use of motifs from nature, family crests, and pictographs as well as Buddhist themes. In 1941, Serizawa created illustrations to the limited edition book on the life of Honen, the founder of Pure Land Buddhism—a devotional sect which focuses on the worship of Amida, the Buddha who presides over the Western Paradise. In commemoration of a monk, Serizawa reprinted this image of an episode from Honen’s life 33 years after the book was made. The value of Serizawa’s prints with Buddhist themes was such that they could function as pious donations to temples.
