Goyo trained in both traditional Japanese and Western styles and his Western influence is evident in the volumetric depiction of the human body. The subject confronts, yet disengages the viewer, unprecedented in traditional Japanese woodblock prints of beauties. The lightly shaded body in contrast to the tones and patterns of the robe and surroundings gives the subject matter more depth. Although Goyo began as a Shin hanga artist, he later developed as an independent printmaker.
