Genki, worked in Kyoto and was one of the top pupils of Maruyama Okyo (1733–1795). Genki followed Okyo’s style in the realistic rendition of objects, as showcased in the architectural and garden settings in this painting. Genki specialized in flowers and animals, but his most popular subject was ladies in contemporary Chinese fashion, as seen in this painting. This depiction of a Chinese lady stresses her delicate facial features, such as slender eyes, light skin complexion, and her full hairdo with jeweled ornaments. The detailed patterns of her fabrics match the luxurious furniture and decor of the background building. The blossoming peach tree and silky curtains also suggest the figure is a “court lady” who enjoys the spring season in nature. Genki’s court lady paintings are also in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.
