Elephant in the Room
(Ladan Akbarnia)
This intimate portrait of an elephant and female mahout demonstrates the skill and empathy with which Indian artists, in this case from the Deccan, could portray the emotion and humanizing qualities of elephants. The finely dressed woman riding the elephant on its shoulders instead of in the saddle may be of royal or noble standing, perhaps boasting her ability to drive and keep her own elephant.
