A maid tries to console a lonely Radha
Page from The Lover’s Guide (Rasikapriya)
Northern India, Kangra, ca. 1820
Opaque watercolor and gold on paper

The poetic text of the Rasikapriya defines various types of lovers and the relevance of seasons and moods in the expression of their love. Sets of Rasikapriya paintings would illustrate these different figures, often using the god Krishna and his beloved Radha as the model for human couples. In this painting, Radha impatiently awaits Krishna on a rainy night, but it seems that he might not appear. Her maid says to her that the birds outside the palace are not peacocks but actually messengers from Kama, the god of love, who are telling her not to sulk.
