The British took a keen interest in the customs and dress of the varieties of ethnic and tribal groups of India. This example depicts three members of the Guddie tribe of the Kangra valley in the western foothills of the Himalayas, and the artist took care to carefully depict their individual headdress. The number twenty-one in the upper left corner indicates that this painting comes from a set belonging to a British collector who also labeled it at the bottom of the page. The artist took care to create a naturalistic effect, making heavy use of shading and modeling. Such paintings were especially popular prior to the advent of photography.
